In a world where teenage girls are often bombarded with conflicting messages about identity, success, and self-worth, a small group of high school students decided to chart a different course. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to them, they created their own, founding a sorority grounded not in popularity or exclusivity, but in purpose. From its inception, Enchantée Sorority was dedicated to empowering high school girls to realize their full potential and lead meaningful, purpose-driven lives.
Enchantée's mission included four foundational pillars:

Enchantée was founded in 1976 by Miriam (Dingle) Liggett and Karen (Hart) Birdsong with a vision of creating a group of outstanding, scholarly Black students from high schools across the city and bringing them together in sisterhood. The idea was sparked after noticing that while white students and Jewish students had their own sororities, those spaces did not include girls of color.
Miriam and Karen imagined Enchantée as a way to prepare young teen girls early—to learn the values of service, scholarship, leadership, and commitment to one another. They imagined a group that would not only foster friendships, but also instill the values, discipline, and leadership skills that would prepare members for a lifetime of impact. From those early discussions, Enchantée took shape—a welcoming circle for young Black women to lift each other higher, celebrate their heritage, and serve their communities.
The name Enchantée was proposed by Karen, who was a French language student at the time. Miriam and Karen were immediately drawn to its beautiful sound, its meaning—“enchanted” or “pleased to meet you”—and the welcoming, magical feeling it carried. It perfectly captured the vibe they wanted for this sisterhood.
The very first Enchantée members came from St. Vincent’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic school in Savannah. From the beginning, however, Miriam and Karen knew this sisterhood had to extend beyond a single school. They quickly identified young women at other city high schools—Windsor Forest, Savannah High, Johnson High, and Beach High—whose reputations for academic excellence, character, and grace made them a natural fit.
What began as a dream between two visionaries has grown into a legacy of unity, empowerment, and pride—proving that when young women come together with purpose, they create something lasting and powerful.

The colors of the sorority—maroon and gold—were chosen with deep intention and meaning. Maroon symbolized strength, resilience, and the unwavering commitment each member brought to her personal growth and to the sisterhood. Gold represented excellence, wisdom, and the light each young woman carried into her community. Together, these colors reflected the values of Enchantée: to develop strong character, build lives with purpose, and the pursuit of a life well-lived.

Enchantée Sorority offered a wide range of programs designed to nurture the whole person and support various stages of a young girl's development. From leadership workshops and academic enrichment sessions to cultural outings, service projects, and mentoring circles, each program was thoughtfully created to inspire growth, confidence, and connection.
